Special Summer Study – Edgar Dewitt Jones’s “A Personal Confession of Faith.”

We are two years shy of the centennial of Edgar Dewitt Jones’ arrival in Detroit to become the senior minister of Central Christian Church. Central Christian would merge with Woodward Avenue Christian Church in 1926 to form Central Woodward Christian Church. There are a number of members of the congregation who remember Dr. Jones, and can tell stories of his ministry (several were baptized by him).

On Wednesday August 1, at 1:30, Pastor Bob will lead a discussion of Dr. Jones’ sermon “A Personal Confession of Faith.” The sermon was preached on February 18, 1940. It is an interesting document in which he shares his theology, his commitment to the Disciples and to the ecumenical movement, and to the United States. The sermon begins “Twenty-one years ago I began my Detroit ministry. It was a far different city from the Detroit we know today.” The sermon appears in Jones’ book A Man Stood Up to Preach, published in 1943.

We will meet in the library, and all are welcome to attend. Copies of the sermon will be provided.
